You Talkin' to Me??

I don't know why, but this picture cracks me up every time I look at it. I just had to share it. I mean, c'mon... you can't help but laugh at this little guy!

It's, of course, a praying mantis who jumped out at me the other day when I brushed against a bush. I have such a collection of bugs in my yard that it's crazy, but this is the first time I have seen one of these. It took multiple shots to get just a few that weren't blurred because of the way that they move, and every time I went to take a shot, he would turn his head. I was just praying that he didn't jump on me when he looked at me like that!

They capture their prey with very sharp spines located on their front legs, then paralyze them, before devouring them alive. They like beetles, spiders, crickets, and grasshoppers, which I have plenty of and since they also eat butterflies and little frogs, I hope he's getting his fill of grasshoppers and will leave my butterflies and frogs alone!

Interesting creatures.

  1. WWe don't see as many of these as we used to. I remember one time there was one on the screen door, and we just watched and watched, the boys were fascinated, and had never seen one..and it had be years since I had..

  2. Fantastic picture! We saw a mantis a few years ago on our front deck, but none since then.

  4. Oh my goodness, what a fantastic shot! We live in the country and have all kinds of bugs too. Today when I was cleaning, there on the door facing was one of these walking sticks....like the praying mantis but stick-like and brown. It freaked me out, but now I wish I had grabbed my camera! I need to be braver. Love your recipes!
